Jules Scogna pitched her first career seven-inning complete game and
Riley York hit her fourth homer of the season as the Saint Joseph's softball team won game two of a twinbill against the George Mason Patriots, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. GM took the opened 3-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sierra Fretz led SJU with four hits across the two games.
- Kayla Tauber had three hits. Hailey Peterson delivered a pair of hits and two RBI.
- SJU Pitching allowed four earned runs in the two games and struck out 11 batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
- The game proved to be a pitcher's duel as it was scoreless through four innings with the teams combining for two hits.
- St. Joe's cracked the scoreboard first in the fifth as Peterson doubled, was sacrificed to third by Kasi Loser and scored on a Tauber groundout.
- George Mason rallied late, scoring three in the sixth inning.
- Taylor Trowbridge (8-7) authored her sixth complete game of the season, striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
- In the third, Sarah Cancila walked with one out. Following a fielder's choice, York clubbed a two-run homer to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
- The Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the inning, to knot the score at 2-2.
- SJU took the lead for good in the fifth. Fretz and Meghan Sinkus singled to start the inning and moved up a base each on a sac bunt from Jenna Currie. Peterson came up next and doubled down the leftfield line, plating both runners, giving Saint Joseph's a 4-2 lead.
- Getting some insurance in the sixth, Cancila led off with a double and stole third. York stepped to the plate and singled to bring home Cancila, upping the edge to 5-2.
- The offense was plenty for Scogna (5-3) who tossed a gem, scattering four hits. She struck out six and got 11 ground ball outs.
