FAIRFAX, Va. – Playing the rubber game of the series, the Saint Joseph's softball team was upended in a 10-inning heartbreaker, 1-0 to the George Mason Patriots on Sunday afternoon
BY THE NUMBERS
- Meghan Sinkus singled in the sixth for her 100th career base knock.
- Taylor Trowbridge was outstanding for the second consecutive day, tossing a career-high nine scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six.
- The outing from Trowbridge was the longest for a St. Joe's pitcher since Ashley Ventura also threw nine innings on March 9, 2018 against Western Michigan.
- Sierra Fretz had a single and a double in the contest and was on base four times, also being hit by two pitches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trowbridge showed her mettle early on when after a walk, wild pitch and sacrifice put a GM runner on third with only one out, the junior from Mesa, Ariz. struck out the next two batters to keep the inning scoreless.
- Both teams had chances in the middle innings as the Hawks and Patriots both had situations with runners on third with less than two out, but neither team was able to push a run across.
- Still tied 0-0 into the bottom of the eighth, the SJU defense came up big. After the leadoff hitter for the Patriots walked. The next batter sacrificed moving the runner to second. Trying to catch St. Joe's napping, the runner looked to take third, but Sarah Cancila threw a strike across the diamond to Jenna Currie who tagged the runner to clear the bases.
- GM walked off the game with a homer to start the 10th.
