Cancila Reaches Milestone as Softball Topples Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Hawks downed the Penn Quakers 9-0 on Wednesday evening.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sarah Cancila became the 27th player in Saint Joseph's softball history with 150 hits, claiming the milestone with a double to lead off the game.
  • The top four hitters in the St. Joe's lineup, Cancila, Hailey Malito, Riley York and Sierra Fretz combined to reach base 11 times and drove in six runs.
  • SJU pitchers scattered four hits through the game, striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks wasted no time in getting on the board as Cancila led off with her milestone double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Malito and York followed with walks to load the bases. Fretz stepped in and grounded a ball to the left side that was bobbled by the third baseman, allowing Cancila and Malito to score for a 2-0 SJU lead.
  • In the second, an error, a walk by Kayla Tauber and a single from Cancila loaded the bases again. Malito stepped up and looped a ball into left for a single, scoring Marla Freiwald, pushing the lead to 3-0. Next up, York lifted a sac fly to right, bringing home Tauber.
  • After both teams didn't dent the scoreboard in the third, SJU got the offense fired back up in the fourth. Cancila singled for her third hit of the day. Two batters later, York reached on an error with Cancila moving to third. York stole second before Fretz smacked a ball through the middle, bringing in both runners. Meghan Sinkus followed with an RBI single of her own, plating Fretz, making it 7-0.
  • The Hawks pushed across the final runs in the seventh on a sac fly from Malito to score Kayla Tauber who singled to lead off the frame and on an error.
  • In the circle, Freiwald (6-2) was dominant, allowing one hit in four scoreless innings. Jenna Wagner recorded her first save of the season with three scoreless innings.
