PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's softball team held the top offense in the Atlantic 10 to a pair of runs as the Hawks swept a doubleheader from the George Washington Revolutionaries, winning game one 6-0 and taking the second contest, 4-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The combination of Taylor Trowbridge, Jules Scogna and Marla Freiwald held a George Washington offense that came into the day leading the A-10 in batting and was second in runs off the scoreboard for the first 10 innings of the day and to two runs in total.
- Hailey Malito and Sarah Cancila each had four hits. Cancila had a homerun and four RBI.
- Hailey Peterson went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks and four runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
- The Hawks got on the board in the second on a two out single from Kayla Tauber, bringing home Hailey Peterson, who had singled and moved to second on a wild pitch.
- In the third, Sarah Cancila led off with a double and came across the plate one batter later when Hailey Malito singled through the middle for a 2-0 SJU lead.
- The fourth inning saw St. Joe's strike again as after falling behind in the count, Peterson worked an impressive walk and again moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batter later, Tauber roped a double down the rightfield line, scoring Peterson.
- Next up was Cancila who singled to center, bringing home Tauber, increasing the advantage to 4-0.
- Saint Joseph's used the long ball to extending the lead in the sixth as both Sierra Fretz and Peterson hit solo homers, pushing it to 6-0 Hawks.
- For all of the offense, the game belonged to Trowbridge (9-8) who tossed her third shutout of the season. The junior from Mesa, Ariz. scattered five hits in the contest and tied a season-high with seven punchouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
- SJU wasted no time as Sarah Cancila bunted her way on and moved to third on a single from Malito. Riley York came up and smacked a sac fly to left, bringing in Cancila for the opening run of the contest.
- George Washington found its way onto the board with a pair of runs in the fourth.
- The bottom of the order got things started in the fifth for St. Joe's. A walk by Peterson and a hit by pitch to Kasi Loser were followed by a sac bunt from Tauber, putting runners on second and third. After working the count in her favor, Cancila connected on her third homer of the year, putting the Hawks up 4-2.
- Scogna (6-3) tossed five innings to earn the win Freiwald went six up, six down to notch her fifth save of the year.
- The five saves for Freiwald are the second most in St. Joe's single-season history, .
