Epic Comeback Powers Baseball to 25-15 Win Over Davidson

MERION STATION, Pa. – Trailing by eight in the second inning, the Saint Joseph's baseball team roared back for a 25-15 run-rule victory over Davidson at Smithson Field on Saturday afternoon.  In the game, Colton Book recorded his 92nd strikeout of the season, setting a new single-season program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Davidson (16-22 overall, 11-7 Atlantic 10) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back-to-back solo home runs by Eli Putnam, Cider Canon, and Michael O'Shaughnessy and a later solo shot by Chris Schuchart.

• The Wildcats extended the lead in the second on a three-run home run by Canon and a solo shot by Anthony Torreso, but Blake Primrose hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame to get the Hawks on the board.

• Saint Joseph's (18-18 overall, 12-6 Atlantic 10) got back into the game in the third as Joey Gale led off with a double and came around to score on a groundout by Carson ApplegateOwen Petrich followed with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 8-5.

• Davidson scored two more in the fourth on a two-run shot by Canon, but a walk to Sam Meyer led to both Gale and Alex Kelsey being hit by pitches to load the bases in the bottom of the inning.  A sacrifice fly by Applegate and a single by Joey Pagano then made it a 10-7 game.

• After a scoreless fifth, the Wildcats tacked one on in the sixth on a single by Torreso.

• The Hawks went to work in the bottom of the sixth, sending 16 batters to the plate and scoring 13 times to take the lead.  Applegate walked to start the inning before Pagano singled; Petrich then ripped a double to left to bring home a run before Primrose followed with an RBI single and Tim Dickinson hit an RBI double to make it 11-10.

• Aidan Duda then walked to load the bases for Meyer, who drew another walk to force in the tying run.  Gale was then hit by a pitch once again to bring home the go-ahead run.

• Kelsey then singled home a run before Pagano hit a two-run double two batters later to stake the Hawks to a 15-11 lead.  Petrich was issued an intentional walk to bring up Primrose, who responded with a two-run ground-rule double before Dickinson hit a no-doubt-about-it home run to right to push the advantage to 20-11.

• Davidson resurrected its chances in the top of the seventh, plating four on two-run home runs by Jack Cotrone and Canon.

• The Hawks finished things off in the bottom of the frame.  Gale was hit for the third time and Kelsey was hit for a second before a walk to Applegate loaded the bases.  Pagano then hit a long fly ball to left that hung up in the air before hitting the bottom of the fence; the runners were forced to hold, however, allowing just one to score on the play.  Petrich rectified the situation with a two-run double before Primrose hit a sacrifice fly to deep center and allow Petrich to get to third and put the winning run 90 feet away.

• After an intentional walk to Dickinson, a passed ball allowed Petrich to scamper home and make it a 25-15 game, invoking the travel day run rule.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Luke Parise threw two and two-thirds innings of relief and was credited with the win, while Brycen Champey was tagged with the loss after facing five batters and retiring none of them.

• Both starters were long gone when this one was decided; Book tossed four innings, while Matt Weber was pulled after two and two-thirds for Davidson.

• Book struck out five on the day, giving him 92 for the season.  That surpasses Will McCausland's 91 strikeouts in 2024 for the most by a Hawk in a single season.

• Pagano finished the day 5-for-6 with four runs scored and four driven in, while Petrich and Primrose had four hits apiece and Dickinson collected three.

• Petrich scored five runs, while Gale also scored four times and Primrose crossed the plate three times.  Primrose led the Hawks with six RBI, while Petrich added five and Dickinson four.

• Gale matched a single-game program record when he was hit three times; he is fourth Hawk to be hit three times in a game and the first since Kevin Kratochwill in March of 2014.

• Canon was 5-for-5 with four home runs for the Wildcats.
