Softball Puts Up Three-Year High in Runs in Series Finale at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Saint Joseph's softball team scored its most runs in an inning and in a game in three years as the Hawks took the rubber game of an Atlantic 10 series from the Rhode Island Rams 14-1 on Saturday morning. SJU was upended in the completion of a suspended game from Friday night, 6-2 to start the day.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The nine runs in the first inning and 14 runs in the game are both the most for St. Joe's since May 8, 2022, also against URI. The Hawks scored nine fourth inning runs and 20 runs total in that contest.
  • Sarah Cancila and Hailey Malito each had four hits across the two games. Cancila drove in four while Malito knocked home three.
  • Morgan Lester collected a career-high three hits in the second contest with two doubles and two RBI.
  • Sierra Fretz homered in the third inning of the second game, making it five consecutive hits for the senior that have gone over the wall.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • A pair of first inning singles helped to load the bases in the first for the Hawks, but the Rams escaped the inning. In the bottom of the frame, a pair of errors opened the door for five Rhode Island runs, only two of which were earned. URI added a second inning run as well before the game was suspended due to darkness after five innings.
  • Resuming the contest on Saturday morning, the St. Joe's bats went to work right away as Kayla Tauber singled in front of a Sarah Cancila double, plating Tauber. A walk to Hailey Malito and a fly out moved Cancila to third where she stood as Meghan Sinkus lifted a sac fly to right for the second SJU run of the frame.
  • Marla Freiwald came on in relief on Friday night and then continued the game on Saturday morning, tossing six innings, allowing just one run on two hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME THREE
  • The Hawks kept the morning offense going from the opening batter as Tauber singled. Two hitters later, Malito picked up a single, moving Tauber to third, while Malito advanced to second on the throw. Both runners moved up with Tauber scoring on a wild pitch.
  • A walk to Sierra Fretz put runners on the corners for Sinkus who delivered an RBI hit to center, extending the lead to 2-0. Riley York followed with a walk to load the bases. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Jenna Currie singled to right, plating Fretz and Sinkus, making it 4-0.
  • Still adding runs in the opening stanza, Morgan Lester collected her first double and RBI of the season, bringing York across the plate. Two batters later, Tauber walked to load the bases.
  • That brought up Cancila who laced a triple to right, clearing the bases for an 8-0 Hawks advantage. Malito closed the scoring in the inning with an RBI double, bringing home Cancila, making it 9-0.
  • After the Rams got a run back in the bottom of the frame, SJU pushed across another tally in the third on the second double of the game by Lester who stole third and came in on a groundout by Tauber. In the fourth, Fretz led off the inning with her ninth homer of the season.
  • The Hawks cemented the final with two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Meanwhile, in the circle, Jules Scogna (4-2) recorded her first career complete game. After surrendering her only run of the game in the first inning, she allowed just one hit the reminder of the contest and retired the last eight batters she faced.
