OLEAN, N.Y. – Four multi-run innings, including a pair of five-spots, powered the Saint Joseph's baseball team to a run-rule-shortened 15-2 victory and a series sweep at St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Bonaventure (10-19 overall, 2-10 Atlantic 10) got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead on a double by Morgan Little and a single by Ryan Davis in the bottom of the second.
Â
• The Hawks responded immediately, hanging five on the board in the third.Â
Aidan Duda led off with a single before a walk to
Michael Pierson put two on; after a fielder's choice erased Duda,
Alex Kelsey followed with a single to drive in the first run of the day for SJU.Â
Carson Applegate was then hit by a pitch to bring up
Joey Pagano, who tied the game with a sacrifice fly before
Owen Petrich promptly untied it with a three-run home run.
Â
• Duda singled and Pierson walked again in the fourth, followed by a single from
Joey Gale to load the bases; Kelsey then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (13-17 overall, 7-5 Atlantic 10) extended its lead with a pair in the fifth as Pagano led off with a walk and
Blake Primrose ripped a two-run home run later in the inning.
Â
• Gale then started the sixth with a single before Kelsey hit a single of his own; an error by the left fielder would allow both runners to score and give the Hawks a 10-2 lead.
Â
• The Hawks put things away with five in the seventh. Primrose led off with a single before Duda reached on an error and Pierson drew another free pass to load the bases for Gale, who beat out an infield single to drive in a run. Two batters later, Applegate cleared the bases with a three-run double before Pagano reached on an error, allowing Applegate to score and increase the advantage to 15-2.
Â
•Â
Nathan Stein retired the Bonnies in order in the bottom of the seventh to invoke the run-rule and finish the game.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• After a bumpy second inning, Stein settled in and turned in a strong outing for his first win as a Hawk. He retired the last eight batters he faced and 11 of the last 12 on the way to a complete game; he allowed two runs on six hits, striking out three, and did not walk a batter.
Â
• Luke Roggenburk was tagged for eight runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings to take the loss.
Â
• Gale was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Kelsey scored three times as well. Kelsey, Applegate, Primrose, and Duda all collected two hits, while Applegate and Petrich had three runs batted in.
Â
• For the second time in the series, every Hawk in the starting lineup reached base in the game.
