WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Hailey Peterson tied the game in the sixth and added a three-run homer in the seventh as the Saint Joseph's softball team rallied to advance in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 6-1 win against George Washington on Thursday evening.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Peterson drove in a career-high four runs and hit her second homer of the championship, both against the Revolutionaries.
- Meghan Sinkus collected three hits on the day. Jenna Currie had a double and two RBI.
- Taylor Trowbridge pitched more than five innings out of the bullpen.
- The win was the 30th of the season for St. Joe's, the first time the team has reached the 30-win mark since 2013.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Much like Wednesday against the Revolutionaries, the Hawks worked their way out of early trouble, giving up just one run despite GW loading the bases in each of the first two innings.
- The offense came alive in the sixth for St. Joe's. With one out, Sinkus singled. Sierra Fretz reached on a fielder's choice where Sinkus was able to reach second. Peterson came up and grounded a ball through the middle, plating Sinkus to tie the score.
- After a pinch runner came in for Fretz, Currie stood in and lined a double into the left centerfield gap, scoring both Morgan Lester and Peterson for a 3-1 lead.
- Nursing the lead, SJU stepped up the defense. With a runner on for GW, Sinkus made a catch crashing into the wall for the second out of the inning. The next batter lined a single to center, but Kasi Loser came up throwing and nabbed the runner at the plate to end the inning.
- In the seventh, the Hawks added some insurance. With Sarah Cancila on second and Hailey Malito on first, Peterson hit her second homer in as many days, pushing the lead to 6-1.
- Trowbridge (12-12) dazzled in relief, coming on in with one out in the second and finish off the game. She threw 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out four.
