Men’s Soccer Falls to Dayton in A-10 Opener

DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell in Atlantic 10 opening action on Saturday evening, dropping a 3-1 result on the road to Dayton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Dayton took just 85 seconds to open the scoring after a fizzed cross into the box was tucked away at the back post to give the hosts a lead.
  • The Flyers were able to double the advantage on the 15th minute through a well-driven strike to the far corner from 18 yards out.
  • St. Joe's responded only three minutes later to grab a goal back. Sebastian Perez-Gasiba found room on the right and a low-driven cross was tucked high and past the keeper by Luke Johnson to put the Hawks on the board.
  • Kobe Perlaza flashed a header on target in the 38th minute, falling comfortably to the Dayton goalkeeper as the Hawks looked to level the score.
  • A deflected cross veered on target in the closing moments as Cooper Jennings did well to recover and tally his third save of the opening half to keep the game within one headed into the half.
  • Dayton was able to add a third goal in the 55th minute after springing a counter attack from an SJU corner kick.
  • A red card from UD's Adebayo Dikko gave the Hawks a man-up advantage with eight minutes to play, but the only shot on target was saved as St. Joe's fell in a 3-1 defeat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Johnson registered just his second career goal as a Hawk, finding the back of the net for the first time since scoring against Fordham on October 4, 2023.
  • The Hawks were outshot 19-7 on the evening, Tommaso Rossetto leading the Hawks with four shots in the contest.
  • Cooper Jennings finished with a season-high four saves in the defeat.
  • Eight Hawks played the full 90 minutes.

UP NEXT
  • The Hawks continue a three-game road swing with a midweek trip to Bryant on Tuesday, September 16. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
