Mazzotta Bags Two Goals in Men’s Soccer’s 2-0 Win Over Duquesne

PHILADELPHIA Matteo Mazzotta netted a pair of goals to lift the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Duquesne in Atlantic 10 play on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-3-2 (1-1-1 Atlantic 10). Duquesne falls to 5-2-2 (1-2-0 Atlantic 10) on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks once again capitalized on a set piece this season, opening the scoring in the 10th minute off a long throw-in. Duquesne cleared the initial ball in the box, Matteo Mazzotta collected at the top of the box, took one touch, and fired low into the left corner.
  • Cooper Jennings was called into action on the 30th minute, diving low and to his right to turn away a driven shot for his first save of the afternoon.
  • Finn Murray looked to double the lead before the break, forcing a corner kick with a long-range effort that forced the goalkeeper to parry over the bar.
  • Mazzotta struck again just past the hour mark to make it 2-0. After Tommaso Rossetto won possession in the Duquesne penalty area, Glen Lala slipped a pass to Mazzotta to the right side. The midfielder struck his 20-yard attempt to the lower right corner for his second goal of the day.
  • Jennings continued to stand tall, tipping a header from Duquesne's Daman Sangha over the bar to preserve the shutout.
  • The Hawks locked down defensively, holding the Dukes without a shot over the final 20 minutes to seal a 2-0 victory.
