Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against George Mason

PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's cut a double-digit deficit to single digits in the second half, but George Mason held off the rally to earn a 66-59 Atlantic 10 win Sunday at Hagan Arena.

George Mason opened the game shooting 10-for-15 (66.7%) from the field, including a 7-0 run that put the Patriots up 21-9 with two minutes to play in the first quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Rhian Stokes helped Saint Joseph's score seven of the final 10 points of the frame, trimming the deficit to 24-16.

The teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter, as George Mason held an 11-10 scoring edge in the period. Despite a hand in her face from a Hawk defender, Kennedy Harris buried a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Patriots a 38-26 halftime lead.

Saint Joseph's held George Mason scoreless over the opening five minutes of the third quarter, using a 6-0 run to cut the deficit in half. After a 5-0 personal run from Harris extended the Patriots' lead to as many as 11, the Hawks chipped away to trail by seven heading into the final 10 minutes, 46-39.

Faith Stinson scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter to pull the Hawks within five, but George Mason responded and kept the margin at three possessions or more the rest of the way to secure a 66-59 victory.
