PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team scored the final 12 points in overtime as the Hawks held off a gritty Lafayette squad, beating the Leopards 67-57 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks got a steal and score right off the opening tip, but Lafayette got hot from beyond the arc, connecting on four of its first five shots from distance, taking a 14-11 edge 5:34 into the contest.
- Despite not being able to get its shots to fall, St. Joe's was able to pull ahead with defense, coming up with 10 steals and two shot clock violations. Khaafiq Myers was the primary offensive option, scoring 11 first-half points as SJU took a 31-24 lead into halftime.
- It looked like Saint Joseph's would pull away early after scoring the first two baskets of the second half, but the Leopards hung around, never allowing the lead to get higher than 10 the rest of the game.
- A pair of Lafayette free throws put LC on top 51-50 with 2:04 to play. St. Joe's countered by going 5-of-6 at the line, taking a 55-51 lead with 12 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, the Leopards went to the line, hitting both. The Hawks were unable to get the ball in play, turning it over to LC, Lafayette then sent the game to overtime with three seconds left.
- LC scored the first two points of the extra session, but Saint Joseph's fired back, scoring the last 12 points in the game.
