Baseball Splits Doubleheader at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team split a doubleheader with High Point on Saturday, falling in the opener before scoring in five separate innings to earn their first win of the season in the nightcap.

GAME 1: High Point 3, Saint Joseph's 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team got anything going until the fifth, when High Point (2-1) had runners on the corners with one out, but reliever Sam Greer induced a double play to escape the jam.

• An error in the bottom of the sixth would allow the Panthers to push across the first run of the day; they would go on to add two more in the eighth to set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Ty Brachbill earned the win for High Point with six shutout innings, while Greer took the loss after being charged with three runs, two of them earned, in three and two-thirds innings.

• Cole Fehrman made his first start as a Hawk, striking out seven and allowing two hits in four and a third innings.

• Jack Saker recorded a pair of hits in his first career start at first base.

GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 6, High Point 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (1-2) opened the scoring in the top of the first on a solo home run by Jason Janesko, but the Panthers used a lead-off home run in the bottom of the frame to draw level.

• Ben Peterson came to the plate for his first collegiate at bat in the top of the third and cashed in with his first career hit, a solo home run to put the Hawks back on top.  An inning later, Carson Applegate went deep for a 3-1 Hawk lead.

• Tim Dickinson and Janesko started off the sixth with singles; two batters later, a sacrifice fly by Applegate pushed the advantage to 4-1.

• The Hawks extended the lead in the seventh; Richard Beggy and Peterson got things started with singles before a two-run double by Alex Kelsey made it a 6-1 game.

• The Panthers put two on with nobody out in the seventh, but Matt Fitzgibbon closed out his relief outing by striking out the final three hitters he faced to keep the lead at five.

• Andrew Gaines came on to throw two shutout innings, fanning four, to secure the first win of the season for the Hawks.
