Softball Drops Heartbreaker to Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. – The Saint Joseph's softball team was dealt a heartbreaking defeat in the second game of a doubleheader, falling to the Delaware Blue Hens, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. UD won the opener 11-3 in six innings.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Julia Shearer had two hits and four RBI across the two games.
  • Gianna Muhaw went 2-for-3 in the second contest of the day.
  • Jules Scogna threw five-plus innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • After the Blue Hens jumped on the board early, the Hawks chipped away with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth.
  • In the third, Elyssa Hasapis led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Shearer followed with an RBI groundout to get SJU on the board.
  • The fourth inning saw Haley McMenamin lead off with a single and promptly swiped second and third. Hailey Peterson came up and lifted a sac fly to left to plate the runner. In the fifth, St. Joe's loaded the bases. Shearer came up again and drove a ball to center that nearly cleared the wall before settling into the fielder's glove for a sac fly.
  • Ava Farina pitched 4.1 innings in relief, striking out five, including fanning the side in the fourth.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • Saint Joseph's dented the scoreboard with the initial runs of the game in the second inning. With one out, Morgan Lester and Muhaw each singled. Two batters later, Grace Brown roped a ball into left for a single, scoring Lester and moving Muhaw to third. Shearer stepped in and lined a ball past the shortstop that rolled all the way to the warning track and sent Muhaw and Brown across the plate for a 3-0 SJU lead.
  • UD got a run in the third and put up a big threat in the fourth, loading the bases on a single and two walks. On a 3-2 pitch, Scogna got Sorella Gallucci to foul out weakly to third to end the inning.
  • Scogna would pitch into the sixth where after surrendering a leadoff single, she was relieved by Shearer. The lefty struck out a pair, stranding the tying run on first to end the inning. In the seventh, Delaware was able to push across the runs needed to win the game.
