TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's softball team opened its run at the USF Invitational on Thursday, being upended, 6-2 by the host South Florida Bulls.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Julia Shearer and Gianna Muhaw each had two hits. Shearer had an RBI.
- Grace Brown went 1-for-4 and now has hits in six of her first seven career games.
- Shearer delivered her first complete game in a St. Joe's uniform in the circle. After a tough first inning, she allowed two runs in her final five frames, striking out six in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks were down early following a four-run first inning by the Bulls. SJU righted things and kept USF off the board through the fourth inning.
- In the top of the fifth, St. Joe's dented the scoreboard. Morgan Lester was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Muhaw came up and singled through the middle. Elyssa Hasapis sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out. Brown scored Lester with a groundout. Shearer followed with a single, bringing Muhaw across the plate, cutting the lead to 4-2.
- South Florida added a run in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the lead back to three before tacking one more in the sixth.
