Softball Picks up Two Wins in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's softball team got a pair of complete games in the circle and benefited from a potent offense as the Hawks won both of their Friday games at the USF Invitational. SJU downed Colgate 5-1 in a morning contest before dispatching Boston College, 8-2.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Haley McMenamin had four hits across the two games, driving in four. Two of the hits were her first career homeruns, one of them an inside-the-park shot.
  • Riley York recorded five hits in the two games, driving in five.
  • Julia Shearer Went 4-for-4 in the second game with two doubles and four RBI.
  • Jules Scogna was brilliant against Colgate, tossing a complete game with four strikeouts.
  • Not to be outdone, Taylor Trowbridge also went the distance, fanning six.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST COLGATE
  • After Scogna set the Raiders down in order in the top of the first, the Hawks went to work with the bats in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Shearer walked. York drove a ball to left that was misplayed by the fielder, allowing Shearer to score, also advancing York to second. McMenamin stepped in and singled through the right side to plate York for a 2-0 SJU lead.
  • Colgate scored in the top of the second, but St. Joe's came right back. Jenna Currie singled and advanced to second on a bunt by Morgan Lester. Elyssa Hasapis followed with a single to bring home Currie.
  • Remaining 3-1 into the bottom of the sixth, the Hawks put the game away. York singled. Ava Farina came in to run for her, but the extra speed wasn't needed as McMenamin launched her first career homer down the rightfield line, extending the advantage to 5-1.
  • The run support was more than enough for Scogna, who continued her stellar start to the season. She tossed a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST BOSTON COLLEGE
  • SJU jumped on top in the first inning as York singled home Shearer, who had doubled with two out. Boston College got the run back in the bottom of the frame.
  • With the score tied 1-1 into the second, the St. Joe's offense exploded. Leading off the frame, McMenamin hit her second homer of the twinbill, this time an inside-the-park shot to left center. Alivia Heers got the offense restarted with her first career hit, a double, chasing the Eagles' starter.
  • After a flyout, Gianna Muhaw reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, a throwing error allowed Heers to come across the plate and moved Muhaw to second. Hasapis drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Shearer delivered her second double of the contest down the third base line, scoring both Muhaw and Hasapis. Closing the scoring in the inning, York followed with a double of her own, plating Shearer, giving the Hawks a 6-1 lead.
  • BC added an uneanred run in the fifth, but Trowbridge was able to escape further trouble with a popout to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Hasapis led off with a single and moved to third on a single from Grace Brown. Shearer came up and delivered again with an RBI single for a 7-2 Hawks' advantage. York followed with a two-bagger, scoring Shearer to make it 8-2.
  • Trowbridge was excellent for the Hawks, allowing seven hits and one earned run.
