TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Joseph's softball team rallied with a five-run seventh inning as the Hawks won their final game at the USF Invitational, beating Marist, 7-4. SJU fell to Indiana in the opener 10-1.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Elyssa Hasapis had one of her best days in a St. Joe's uniform, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base across the two games.
- Riley York had a pair of hits and two RBI.
- Meghan Sinkus had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
- Marla Freiwald earned her first save of the year.
- SJU showed a good eye at the plate, walking 10 times against the Red Foxes.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST INDIANA
- The Hoosiers jumped out to a 6-0 lead early.
- St. Joe's got on the board in the second. York doubled to lead off the frame. Sinkus came up with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Three batters later, Hasapis delivered an RBI single.
- Indiana put the game away with three runs in the fifth.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARIST
- SJU got scored the initial run of the game in the top of the first as York drove home Grace Brown who walked two batters prior. Marist countered in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
- The Hawks tied it in the fifth as two walks and a single loaded the bases for York who drew a bases-loaded walk to knot the game at 2-2.
- With a run in each the fifth and sixth innings, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 4-2 lead.
- Saint Joseph's had the final say, however, hanging a five spot in the seventh. A single, hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases. York reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, Hasapis reached on a throwing error, slicing the gap to one.
- A walk by Sinkus forced in a run before a groundout by Gianna Muhaw brought home Brown to give the Hawks the lead. Alivia Heers came up as a pinch-hitter and drilled a double to left-center, scoring a pair and putting SJU on top 7-4.
- In the seventh, Freiwald came in and shut the door, earning her first save of the season.

St. Joe's has its final early season tournament of the year when it travels to Conway, S.C. for the Beach Chicken Brawl, February 27 through March 1. SJU begins with a pair of games on Friday, taking on FAU at 12:30 p.m. before a 6:00 p.m. contest against the host Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
