CONWAY, S.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team was able to get its trip to South Carolina started on Saturday, splitting a pair of games at the Beach Chicken Brawl. The Hawks beat Binghamton 10-7 in their first contest before falling 6-4 to Coastal Carolina in the evening game.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Julia Shearer had a big day with four hits across the two games with two homeruns, five RBI and four runs scored.
- Haley McMenamin and Meghan Sinkus both had three hits on the day. McMenamin drove in two runs and Sinkus knocked in one.
- Ava Farina tossed a career-high 5.1 inning with five punchouts,
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST BINGHAMTON
- It was a rough start for the Hawks, who found themselves down 4-0 after the top of the second.
- In the fourth, Shearer led off with a single and was brought in by a McMenamin RBI double two batters later. McMenamin stole third and scored on a Sinkus double, pulling SJU to within two runs.
- St. Joe's tied the game in the fifth. With one out, Gianna Muhaw doubled. Two batters later, Shearer hit her first homer in a Saint Joseph's uniform, knotting the game at 4-4.
- Binghamton retook the lead in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, the Hawks exploded, sending 11 batters to the plate, scoring six runs. The freshman trio of Lauren Stalica, Elissa Hasapis and Grace Brown all drove in runs in the frame before Riley York delivered the big blow, a bases loaded double.
- The Bearcats put up a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning, but St. Joe's was able to shut the door.
- Farina got the win, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST COASTAL CAROLINA
- The Hawks manufactured a first inning run as a Brown walk was followed by a Shearer single. York bunted the runners to second and third. McMenamin scored Brown on a groundout for a 1-0 SJU lead.
- The Chanticleers went in front with three runs in the third and two in the fourth.
- Saint Joseph's came back in a big way in the fifth. Hasapis singled. Two batters later, Muhaw walked. That set the stage for Shearer to hit her second homer of the day, a three-run shot that closed the gap to 5-4.
- Coastal Carolina scored again in the bottom of the inning. SJU brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but were not able to push the runs across
