Softball Wraps Play at Beach Chicken Brawl

CONWAY,  S.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team wrapped play at the Beach Chicken Brawl on Sunday. In its first game of the day, the Hawks took a narrow 2-0 loss to a Florida Atlantic team that is receiving votes in the NFCA Coaches Poll. Game two saw SJU upended 11-3 by the host of the invitational, Coastal Carolina.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Julia Shearer shined in the circle, tossing 7.2 innings across the two games, scattering five hits while allowing two runs and striking out five.
  • Riley York had three hits on the day.
  • Lauren Stalica drove in a pair of runs and had two hits in the second contest.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST FLORIDA ATLANTIC
  • The game was a pitcher's duel as there were only seven total hits in the contest.
  • FAU scored the only runs of the game on a homer in the fourth.
  • Julia Shearer had her best game in the circle in a St. Joe's uniform, going six innings, surrendering just four hits and striking out three with no walks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST COASTAL CAROLINA
  • It was a rough start for the Hawks as the Chanticleers scored four in the first inning.
  • Shearer came in and settled things down, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, fanning two.
  • After CCU added a run in the third, the Hawks began to battle back in the fourth. With one out, Riley York singled and Grace Brown doubles. Stalica came up and singled to right, plating both runners. A fielder's choice and a double by Morgan Lester put runners back on second and third, Gianna Muhaw came through with an infield single, scoring Hailey Peterson, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
  • St. Joe's was able to keep Coastal of the board in the bottom of the fourth, but the Chanticleers scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to end the game.
 
UP NEXT
Saint Joseph's has its home opener on Wednesday, March 4 when it takes on Drexel. First pitch from the SJU Softball Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
