Softball Sweeps Twinbill Against Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA – Late game heroics in the opener and a pitching masterclass in the second game lifted the Saint Joseph's softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday afternoon. St. Joe's won the first game 6-3 and took the second contest 8-0 in six innings.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • The Rams got out to a 2-0 lead with runs in each of the first two innings.
  • SJU tied the game in the third, first loading the bases on a hit by pitch, a single and a walk. A wild pitch allowed Morgan Lester to score ahead of York lifting a sac fly to right, bringing in Hasapis.
  • Rhode Island took the lead back in the fourth, but the Hawks forged ahead for good in the fifth. Gianna Muhaw singled followed by a Hasapis double. With the two runners in scoring position, Shearer came up with a single, plating both, putting St. Joe's up 4-3.
  • SJU extended the advantage in the sixth with the long ball. Brown hit her first career homer leading off the inning. Two batters later, Currie followed suit, pushing the edge to 6-3.
  • Shearer tossed five innings to pick up her second win of the season. Trowbridge didn't allow an earned run in two innings to earn the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • The Hawks got all the offense they needed with a five-run second inning, keyed by a three-run homer by York.
  • In the fourth with Shearer on second after a fielder's choice and a groundout, Peterson drove her home with a double. The game was put away in the sixth as Shearer led off with a double and came in on a Peterson single. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, a wild pitch scored Peterson with the winning run.
  • Trowbridge was brilliant in the circle, allowing two hits and striking out four in the shutout.
