PHILADELPHIA –
Dasear Haskins scored a career-high 23 points as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team led wire-to-wire on its way to a 75-61 win against the Loyola Chicago Ramblers on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- In addition to his scoring total, Haskins pulled in six rebounds and added a block and a steal.
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano also tallied 23 points and had a team-leading eight boards.
- Derek Simpson posted his fourth double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
- The Hawks went 15-for-17 from the line.
- St. Joe's had just eight turnovers, its second consecutive game with single-digit giveaways.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense led the way for the Hawks early, holding Loyola to 2-for-13 shooting in the first nine minutes. SJU opened 4-for-9 from beyond the arc with four different players connecting as SJU built a 17-6 lead at the midway mark of the half.
- St. Joe's continued to extend the lead with a balanced scoring attack as seven different players found the bottom of the net in the opening 20 minutes. The "D" also remained strong, forcing nine first half turnovers and 0-for-10 shooting from three-point range by the Ramblers. The combination allowed SJU to take a 35-20 lead at intermission.
- The Hawks extended the advantage to 40-23 early in the second before Loyola found its stroke. The Ramblers went on a 17-6 run, forcing a Saint Joseph's timeout with 11:47 to go.
- After another Loyola bucket chopped the lead to four, the Hawks responded with force, using a 14-4 spurt to go back up by 14.
- Closing the game out, Simpson knocked down his four free throws in the final 37 seconds to seal the win.
