CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team opened its season on Thursday with a win against the Elon Phoenix, 3-1, in its first game of the day. In an afternoon contest, the Hawks fell to North Carolina.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ELON
- The first game of the day turned out to be a pitcher's duel that went scoreless into the fifth inning. In the top of the frame, Hasapis walked for the second time in the game. She then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. On a 3-2 pitch, Brown singled to third base, scoring Hasapis for a 1-0 SJU lead.
- The lead was, unfortunately, short-lived as the Phoenix plated an unearned run in the bottom of the inning.
- St. Joe's wasted no time in getting the run back and more. In the top of the sixth, Lauren Stalica and York led off with singles. Haley McMenamin came in to pinch-run for Stalica and promptly led the front end of a double steal to put runners on second and third. Jenna Currie looped a ball into rightfield, bringing home McMenamin and moving York to third.
- A sacrifice bunt moved Currie to second to once again give Saint Joseph's a pair of runners in scoring position. Meghan Sinkus came up with an RBI groundout, sending York plateward for a 3-1 SJU lead.
- With the lead in hand, St. Joe's gave the ball to Shearer for the final two innings. She did not allow a run and fanned four to earn the save.
- Trowbridge got the win, picking up where she left off in last year's A-10 Tournament. She did not allow an earned run in five innings of work, surrendering just one hit and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA
- Scoreless into the fourth, the Tar Heels got on the board with one run that inning and added some cushion with three runs in the fifth.
- St. Joe's cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. Hasapis led off with a single and stole second. She moved to third on a groundout and came across the plate on a productive out from Shearer.
- The Hawks did not go quietly, putting two runners on in the seventh, but were unable to push any runs across.
