Baseball Sweeps Richmond as Hamburg Collects 400th Win

RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team led wire to wire on Sunday, securing a series sweep of Richmond with a 5-1 win over the Spiders at Pitt Field.  The win marked the 400th career victory for head coach Fritz Hamburg.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-9 overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) scored in the top half of the first for the third consecutive game as Alex Kelsey drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Blake Primrose, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Pagano.

• The Hawks extended the lead in the third; a Carson Applegate single, a fielder's choice, and a fielding error left two on for Primrose, who ripped another double to plate Kelsey and Ben Peterson and make it a 3-0 game.

• Richmond (10-10 overall, 0-3 Atlantic 10) got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Ryan Recio sacrifice fly.

Alex Venezia gave the Hawks some breathing room with a leadoff home run to start the seventh; he would then add another insurance run with another solo home run in the top of the ninth to set the final score.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
Luke Parise turned in his second consecutive strong outing, allowing a run on five hits in six innings to improve to 2-1.  Angel Santiago-Cruz took the loss for Richmond, falling to 1-1 after allowing three runs in two and a third innings.

Matt Fitzgibbon and Christian Coppola combined to allow just two base runners over the final three innings.

• Primrose finished the day with three doubles, tying the program record for a single game; the mark was last reached by Ryan Cesarini against George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Championship on May 24, 2024.

• Venezia had two hits, both of them solo home runs; both he and Primrose finished with two runs batted in.

• Already Saint Joseph's baseball's all-time leader in career victories – his win total is more than double that of the previous record-holder – Hamburg became the fourth coach in the history of Saint Joseph's athletics to win 400 games as a head coach, following former men's and women's tennis coach Al Laveson (495), former men's basketball coach Phil Martelli (444), and current women's basketball head coach Cindy Griffin (442).  Hamburg is the third coach to amass 400 wins on Hawk Hill with one program.
