PHILADELPHIA — Behind a dominant first-half surge and a career performance from
Kate Fuhrman, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team defeated George Washington, 15-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Fuhrman paced the Hawks with a career-high nine points on five goals and four assists, while
Alexa Capozzoli added four goals and an assist as Saint Joseph's improved to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
The Hawks set the tone early, scoring the game's first four goals in just over four minutes. Capozzoli opened the scoring off a feed from
Riley Miller, and
Kate Kaptrosky followed with a goal before Capozzoli added her second.
Olivia McCloskey capped the run midway through the first quarter to make it 4-0.
George Washington responded with three straight goals, including two from Grace Curry, to cut the deficit to 4-3. Capozzoli answered with a free-position goal to halt the run and give Saint Joseph's a 5-3 lead after one.
The Revolutionaries pulled within one early in the second quarter, but the Hawks seized control with a decisive burst. After a six-minute scoring drought, Saint Joseph's erupted for four goals in 50 seconds. Miller started the surge before Fuhrman scored twice in a 16-second span.
Emma Yoder followed with back-to-back goals, helping the Hawks close the half on a 5-0 run and take a 10-4 lead into the break.
McCloskey opened the second-half scoring off a Fuhrman assist to push the lead to 11-4, but George Washington answered with a 3-0 run, all on woman-up goals from Curry, to trim the deficit to 11-7 late in the third.
Capozzoli stopped the momentum with her fourth goal of the game, and Fuhrman took over in the fourth quarter, scoring all three goals to seal the 15-9 victory.

- Fuhrman moved into ninth all-time in program history in points and is tied for seventh with 65 career assists.

- Kaylyn Williams led the defense with three caused turnovers, three ground balls and four draw controls, while four Hawks recorded multiple caused turnovers.
- Liana Moli made seven saves to earn the win; George Washington's Gabi Greth finished with 12 saves.
- Grace Curry led all scorers with six goals for the Revolutionaries.
- Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (35-31) and draw controls (18-8).
- The Hawks have now won 10 consecutive meetings against George Washington.
