Softball Takes Twinbill Against George Mason

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's softball team took both ends of a twinbill against George Mason in opposite ways, rallying late in a 5-4 win in the opener before scoring early and taking control in the 7-3 victory during the later contest.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • George Mason got single runs in the first and third innings and then plated two unearned tallies in the fourth to open a 4-0 lead.
  • The game remained that way until the bottom of the sixth. Sinkus led off with a walk followed by Shearer's third homer of the season, chopping the lead to 4-2. The Patriots got the next two outs before Currie singled in front of Brown's third long ball of the year, knotting the contest at 4-4.
  • In the seventh, Elyssa Hasapis led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single from Haley McMenamin. Sinkus stood in and grounded a ball back to the circle. The pitcher initially looked Hasapis back to third before trying to get McMenamin at second. Once the ball was thrown to second, Hasapis broke towards the plate and scored the winning run.
  • Shearer earned her fourth complete game of the season, surrendering two earned run and striking out eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • SJU wasted no time in carrying over the offensive momentum as McMenamin walked and Sinkus singled to open the bottom of the first. They then stole second and third before Riley York walked to load the bases. Hailey Peterson came through with a single to left, plating two for the early St. Joe's lead.
  • In the third, Sinkus singled and stole second before Shearer walked. York followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Peterson kept the line moving with a sac fly to score Shearer. On the play, a throwing error on the shortstop allowed York to score, extending the lead to 5-0.
  • Saint Joseph's added a run in the fourth on a groundout by Shearer.
  • The Patriots got on the board with a run in the sixth, but the Hawks answered with two outs in the bottom of the inning on a single from Alivia Heers and a triple by Sinkus. GM pushed two runs across in the seventh to create the final score.
  • Trowbridge authored her fourth complete game of the season.
