BERKELEY, Calif. – A to B. That has been the mantra for Saint Joseph's men's basketball the last two months. Find a way to get from one point to the next, no matter the obstacles in your way.
It was possibly never more accurate than on Sunday night.
Trailing by 19 points with under 14 minutes remaining, the Hawks rallied for a 76-75 win against the Cal Golden Bears in the NIT Second Round on Sunday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Jaiden Glover-Toscano led the Hawks with 24 points. He connected on four threes, tying Langston Galloway for seventh on the SJU single-season list with 90.
- Dasear Haskins had his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
- Derek Simpson once again stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
- Justice Ajogbor scored 10 in the game, the fourth time in the last five games he has reached double figures.
- Jaden Smith had a productive game off the bench with seven points, a rebound, an assist and a steal in seven minutes of action.
- In the closing stretch, the Hawks shot 13-for-23 while holding Cal to 6-for-29 from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 61-42 with 13:30 to play, Saint Joseph's run started innocently enough with a Glover-Toscano layup. The teams went back-and-forth in the next four minutes with SJU whittling the lead to 64-50 on a Khaafiq Myers three-pointer with 12 minutes remaining.
- The Golden Bears scored the next bucket before the Hawks began to wrest away control of the contest. A dunk and a trey from Smith brought SJU to 70-59 before a dunk by Haskins cut the lead to single digits with 6:42 remaining.
- That dunk ignited a run, during which St. Joe's connected on eight of nine shots from the floor. During the same span, Cal shot just 2-for-10. A triple from Williford sliced the lead to 74-73 with 2:30 remaining. On the ensuing possession, the Golden Bears would go 1-for-2 at the line.
- As he has all season, Simpson came down the floor and ran the offense, calling his own number for the go-ahead three from right of the key with 1:50 to go.
- Both teams locked in on defense for the final 110 seconds. Still holding the 76-75 lead with 35 seconds left, SJU came up with its only two blocks of the game. Haskins rejected a shot by Lee Dort for the first one.
- After the Hawks came up empty on the offensive end on their final offensive possession, Dort came down with the board with five seconds to go and delivered an outlet pass to the Golden Bears' leading scorer, Dai Dai Ames. Ames raced down the floor and got a shot off, but Glover-Toscano blocked it and pulled in the board, securing the win for Saint Joseph's.
- St. Joe's got off to a good start, going up 7-0, forcing a Cal timeout. The Hawks pushed the lead out to 16-8 before a 12-3 run gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the game midway through the first half.
- As the half wore on, Cal gained momentum as the Hawks went 5-for-14 from the field in the second portion of the opening frame as the Golden Bears took a 41-33 lead into the break.
- The second stanza opened with a rough start for Saint Joseph's as Cal scored the first six points and extended the lead to 47-33 just 102 seconds into the frame.
