WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Saint Joseph's softball team broke out the bats, scoring 17 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth on Friday afternoon, winning by scores of 7-3 and 10-3.

  • Alivia Heers posted four hits and drove in five runs.
  • Jenna Wagner threw her first complete game of the season

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • Trailing 1-0 due to an unearned run in the first inning, the Hawks bats jumped to life in the top if the third. Gianna Muhaw singled and moved to second on an error that allowed Meghan Sinkus to reach. Julia Shearer bunted the runners to second and third before Riley York walked to load the bases. Lauren Stalica came up with a two-run single, giving SJU a 2-1 lead.
  • Alivia Heers followed with another single, bringing home York and Stalica. Three more runs came across in the inning, upping the lead to 7-1.
  • Monmouth scored a pair of runs in the fifth to close the gap, but the game belonged to Jenna Wagner who tossed the second seven-inning complete game of her collegiate career. She allowed two earned runs in the effort and struck out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • St. Joe's wasted no time in getting on the board as in the top of the first inning, Sinkus and Shearer had back-to-back doubles, giving SJU a 1-0 lead. After a groundout moved Shearer to third, Lauren Stalica doubled to drive in a run. Next up was Heers who clocked a two-run homer to center, pushing the edge to 4-0.
  • Monmouth plated two in the second to cut the lead in half, but SJU came back with three in the fifth on a Jenna Currie sac fly, a passed ball and a bases loaded walk by Elyssa Hasapis. St. Joe's added some insurance in the sixth as an RBI single by Heers plated Shearer who had walked with one out and two more in the seventh on singles by Shearer and Kasi Loser.
  • For SJU, Jules Scogna started and tossed 3.1 innings. Stalica came on in relief and allowed one run in three innings of work.
