Softball Comes Back in Fifth, Wins it in Ten

MERION STATION, Pa.Riley York lofted a sacrifice fly to score Hailey Peterson in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Saint Joseph's softball team came from multiple runs down in the fifth inning to top the Monmouth Hawks, 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Peterson homered and drove in a pair of runs, also scoring three times.
  • York also had two RBI for the day.
  • Morgan Lester went 2-for-2 with both a sac bunt and a sac fly.
  • Ava Farina tossed five innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits, striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 6-2 heading into the sixth, Saint Joseph's batted around, manufacturing five runs to take the lead. Haley McMenamin doubled with one out, followed by walks to Julia Shearer and Peterson to load the bases. Kasi Loser came up with an RBI single, bringing home McMenamin.
  • York followed with a run to force in a run before Brown singled to bring in another tally. Morgan Lester then lifted a sac fly to tie the game. With runners on the corners, Brown intentionally got herself into a rundown and stayed in the pickle long enough to allow York to score, giving SJU a 7-6 lead.
  • The advantage was shortlived as MU scored a run in the top of the sixth.
  • Into extra innings, both teams had chances. Each scored a run in the eighth, pushing the contest to 8-8.
  • Starting the tenth, Monmouth had a runner on third with no outs, but Farina was able to get a pair of groundouts to third, sandwiched around a strikeout to escape the jam.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Peterson was placed on second as the extra runner. Loser sacrificed her to third where she stood when York lifted a sac fly to win the ballgame.
  • Monmouth went on top early with one in the first and a pair of unearned runs in the second.
  • St. Joe's cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second on Peterson's first homer of the season,
  • MU put up two more runs in the third, SJU got one of the runs back in its half of the frame on a sac fly by Peterson to score Sinkus, who walked to open the inning.
