Softball Plays Longest Game in the History of SJU Softball Field

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's softball team played the longest game in the history of SJU Softball Field in the second game of a doubleheader against the Loyola Chicago Ramblers, falling in a 4-2 heartbreaker. The Ramblers took game one by a 7-5 final.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
  • The 11-inning contest was the longest in the history of the SJU Softball Field, which opened in 2011.
  • Taylor Trowbridge threw a complete game in the second contest.
  • Her 11.0 innings pitched are tied for the second most in a game for a St. Joe's pitcher since at least 2005.
  • Erin Gallagher went 12.0 innings against Saint Louis on March 28, 2010 and then tossed 11.0 against the Billikens in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on May 12 of that year. Lauren Hughes tossed 11.0 innings against Fordham on March 26, 2005.
  • According to stats available on the conference website, it is the longest outing for an A-10 pitcher since Jen Mineau (Fordham) and Sara Plourde (UMass) each went all 17.0 innings of a game on May 4, 2012.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Elyssa Hasapis led the offense for the day with four hits, two of them doubles.
  • Gianna Muhaw and Riley York each had a pair of base knocks.
  • Morgan Lester drove in two runs.
  • In her marathon appearance, Trowbridge allowed just seven hits and one earned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • Loyola held a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third when SJU got on the board. A walk to Lester and singles from Hasapis and Meghan Sinkus loaded the bases. Julia Shearer drove in a run on a ground ball to third. Two batters later, York singled to short to bring in Hasapis. On the play the ball caromed to the second baseman, who overthrew third base, trying to get Sinkus. The Hawks' leadoff hitter was able to scamper home for a 3-2 SJU lead.
  • Saint Joseph's added a run in the fourth on a sac fly from Sinkus, bringing home Grace Brown.
  • Loyola tied it with two in the fifth. Undeterred, the Hawks came back in the sixth, going up 5-4 on a Lester double.
  • The Ramblers had the final say, tallying three in the top of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • This time, St. Joe's struck first on a squeeze bunt by Shearer that plated Sinkus in the top of the first.
  • SJU doubled the lead in the third when Lester was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Loyola tied the game with single runs in the fourth and sixth.
  • The game remained that way until the 11th as Trowbridge and Anna Kiel locked into a pitcher's duel. The Hawks had a chance in the ninth with a leadoff double from Hasapis, but were unable to convert before the Ramblers scored the winning run in the game's final inning,
