HENRICO, Va. – A late back-and-forth battle went down to the wire as the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell to No. 4 Davidson, 64-59, in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Henrico Sports & Events Center.
Davidson opened the game on a 6-0 run, holding the Hawks scoreless for nearly four minutes before
Aleah Snead ended the drought. The Wildcats used another 6-2 burst to extend their lead to 10 late in the opening quarter, but Saint Joseph's closed the frame on a 6-3 run. Snead accounted for eight of the Hawks' 10 first-quarter points as St. Joe's trailed 17-10.
Rhian Stokes sparked the Hawks early in the second quarter with a three-pointer that helped cut the deficit to two.
Faith Stinson followed with six straight points, keeping Saint Joseph's within striking distance. Snead then scored five consecutive points, including a layup that tied the game at 26-26 with five minutes remaining in the half. Davidson responded late, outscoring the Hawks 7-4 over the final two minutes to take a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Saint Joseph's opened the second half with four straight points to take its first lead of the afternoon. Davidson answered with a 9-3 run to regain a five-point advantage before
Gabby Casey converted a layup to tie the game at 44-44 late in the third quarter. A foul with 1.7 seconds remaining sent the Wildcats to the line, where they converted twice to take a 46-44 lead into the final period.
Emily Knouse knocked down a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, putting the Hawks back in front. After Davidson built a five-point edge midway through the period, Saint Joseph's responded with an 8-0 run to take a 56-53 lead.
Charlise Dunn answered with a basket to tie the game before Davidson reclaimed the lead with 1:26 to play. The Hawks cut the deficit to one with 27 seconds remaining and regained possession after a jump ball at halfcourt favored Saint Joseph's. Snead drove to the rim and appeared to convert a go-ahead layup, but the play was ruled an offensive foul. Davidson then sealed the game at the free-throw line to secure the 64-59 victory.
