WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Meghan Sinkus recorded her 150th career hit and the Saint Joseph's softball offense came alive as the Hawks won the second game of a doubleheader, downing the George Washington Revolutionaries, 8-2. GW took the first game, 2-1 in 10 innings in a pitcher's duel.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sinkus had three hits in game one and reached base four times. She reached the milestone with a hit in the third inning.
- Alivia Heers had a pair of hits and drove in three in the second game
- Elyssa Hasapis had a hit in both ends of the DH. Hailey Peterson and Gianna Muhaw also each had two hits.
- Julia Shearer turned in arguably her finest performance in the circle for the Saint Joseph's, tossing 9.1 innings, surrendering eight hits and just one earned run. She did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
- At the plate, Shearer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Taylor Trowbridge delivered a complete game victory in the second contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
- St. Joe's cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first. Sinkus and Hasapis both singled and then pulled off a double steal. Two batters later, a Jenna Currie groundout brought home Sinkus for a 1-0 lead.
- GW knotted the game up in the third.
- The contest remained tied at 1-1 into extra innings. SJU had chances in both the ninth and tenth with two outs, but was unable to push the run across. The Revolutionaries scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th to come away with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
- Scoreless into the third, St. Joe's got on the board on an RBI double from Hasapis, scoring Muhaw who singled two batters earlier. George Washington tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
- SJU took control of the game in the fourth. Shearer singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. Heers game through with an RBI single to put the Hawks up 2-1. Two batters later, Morgan Lester walked, bringing up Muhaw. She singled to second base. On the play, the Revs' fielder threw the ball away, allowing two runs to score.
- In the fifth, Saint Joseph's loaded the bases on walks by Hasapis and Jenna Currie, sandwiched around a Shearer single. Heers doubled to center, plating Hasapis and Shearer. A groundout by Grace Brown brought in Currle and a throwing error scored Heers.
- Trowbridge picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out seven.
