RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team battled No. 4 Richmond to the final minutes but came up short in a 13-11 loss on Saturday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Richmond scored two of the game's first three goals in a defensive opening quarter, while
Collin Campbell accounted for both Hawk tallies to keep Saint Joseph's within one after 15 minutes.
The Hawks tightened defensively in the second quarter, holding the Spiders to a single goal. Scores from
Ben Dutton and Campbell evened the game at 4-4 heading into halftime.
Richmond seized momentum out of the break, opening the second half with a 4-0 run over the first six minutes.
Trae Ika halted the surge and added another goal later in the quarter, while
Michael Gaughan scored with 11 seconds remaining to pull the Hawks within two entering the fourth.
Saint Joseph's quickly drew even in the final frame, as Ika scored in the opening minute before Dutton followed with a goal just six seconds after the ensuing faceoff to tie the game at 9-9. Richmond responded with another decisive 4-0 run to regain control, and late goals from
Colby Wood and Campbell were not enough as the Spiders held on for the 13-11 victory.
