Softball Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep of Bonnies

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's softball team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of outstanding pitching performances as the Hawks swept a doubleheader from the St. Bonaventure Bonnies by scores of 3-2 and 6-1 on Saturday.

Following game two, the Hawks celebrated the careers of Jenna Currie, Jules Scogna, Meghan Sinkus, Taylor Trowbridge and Riley York,

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Scogna tossed a one-hitter in the second game, making the fewest hits St. Joe's has allowed this season.
  • Trowbridge did not allow an earned run in a complete game in the first contest, striking out four.
  • Julia Shearer had three hits and three RBI in the DH.
  • Elyssa Hasapis collected four hits, drove in two and scored three. She also stole three bases.
  • Riley York had three hits.
  • SJU had eight steals in the second game and nine overall for the day. In addition to Hasapis' three, Sinkus and Shearer each swiped two.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
  • The Bonnies got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of unearned runs.
  • St. Joe's responded in the second as with one out, Alivia Heers singled and Grace Brown doubled. Morgan Lester lifted a sac fly to right to bring home Heers to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • SJU came through again in the sixth. With one out, Sinkus walked and then stole second. Hasapis came up next with a double and advanced to third on the throw, scoring Sinkus to tie the game. Shearer followed with a groundout, plating Hasapis for a 3-2 lead.
  • Trowbridge made the runs stand up, tossing her seventh complete game of the season. She did not allow and earned run and gave up just three hits. At one point, she retired eight batters in a row and fanned four in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
  • After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Hawks wasted no time in getting on the board in the bottom of the inning. Hasapis singled and stole second. Shearer followed with a walk and the duo executed a double steal before a groundout brought in Hasapis.
  • The Bonnies got the run back on an unearned tally in the top of the second. The Hawks came up and put up a crooked number in the bottom of the inning. Heers tripled to open the inning in front of a Grace Brown walk. Lester came through with her second sac fly of the day, plating Heers and moving Brown to third, where she stood before scoring on a passed ball.
  • Two batters later, Sinkus singled and stole second. Hasapis singled through the middle, scoring Sinkus to third. Shearer closed the scoring in the frame with a triple to center.
  • Saint Joseph's added a run in the sixth on a Shearer sac fly.
  • Meanwhile, Scogna put the game on cruise control, allowing just a bunt single in the fourth as the only St. Bonaventure hit. She struck out three in the game.
