AMHERST, Mass. – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth contest, falling to Massachusetts, 14-12, on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field.
Massachusetts scored three of the game's first five goals to take an early 3-2 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Saint Joseph's answered with a 3-0 run, as
Ben Dutton and
Jack Fiordalis scored to give the Hawks a 4-3 advantage. The Minutemen responded with two goals to regain the lead before
Collin Campbell's finish tied the game at 5-5 at the end of the first quarter.
After a nearly 10-minute scoring drought to open the second, Massachusetts struck first before
Colby Wood answered to even the score. Dutton added another goal following a quick Minutemen response, sending the game into halftime tied at 7-7.
Massachusetts opened the second half scoring six minutes into the third quarter, but goals from
Trae Ika and Campbell gave the Hawks a 9-8 lead. The Minutemen closed the quarter with two goals in the final four minutes to take a 10-9 advantage into the fourth.
Saint Joseph's pulled even three times in the opening seven minutes of the final quarter, but each time Massachusetts answered to reclaim the lead. The Minutemen eventually extended the margin to two goals late and held on for the 14-12 victory.
