Baseball Rallies for Eight in the Ninth to Stun Rhode Island, 14-12, in Regular Season Finale

KINGSTON, R.I. – A Richard Beggy three-run home run capped off an eight-run ninth inning as the Saint Joseph's baseball team came from six runs down to beat Rhode Island, 14-12, at Bill Beck Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rhode Island (23-29 overall, 16-14 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Jack Hopko.

• The Hawks answered in the top of the third.  An infield single by Carson Applegate and a four-pitch walk by Joey Gale put two on with one out for Blake Primrose, who ripped a double to score Applegate and tie the game.  Gale would then score on a wild pitch to put the Hawks on top.  Beggy followed with a double of his own to score Primrose before a Joey Pagano single brought home Beggy for a 4-1 lead.

• The Rams responded in the bottom of the frame with a five-spot, but Saint Joseph's (35-18 overall, 25-5 Atlantic 10
) got one back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gale.

• Walks to Primrose and Beggy and an infield single by Pagano to start the fifth loaded the bases for Jason Janesko, who lofted a sacrifice fly to score Primrose and tie the game.

• Ryan Henschel hit a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth to put the hosts back in front, 7-6.  The Rams tacked on one in the sixth and two in the seventh and eighth to extend the lead.

• The Hawks went to work in the top of the ninth, scoring eight times with two outs.  Pagano singled before walks to Tim Dickinson and Ryan Price loaded the bases.  Applegate, Gale, Kelsey, and Primrose then hit four consecutive run-scoring singles to plate five runs and make it a 12-11 game.  Beggy then took the first pitch he saw deep to the opposite field for a three-run home run and a 14-12 Hawk lead.

Micah Wells then induced a double play and a fly ball to keep the Rams off the scoreboard and end the game.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Wells notched his first save to preserve the win for Patrick Veintimilla, while Connor Grotyohann took the loss for Rhode Island.

• Pagano was 4-for-5 on Saturday with a run scored and a run batted in.  Gale notched three RBI while Primrose added two while scoring three runs; Gale, Beggy, and Applegate scored two runs apiece.

• The teams combined to use 16 pitchers in the game.

• The win gives the Hawks 35 for the season, tying the program record set in 2014.
