Baseball Stays Alive, Sets Program Record with 14-4 Rout of George Mason at Atlantic 10 Championship

TYSONS, Va.Cole Fehrman tossed a complete game and every Hawk in the starting lineup scored or drove in a run as the top-seeded Saint Joseph's baseball team topped fourth-seeded George Mason, 14-4, on a rainy Friday night at Capital One Park.

The win is the 36th of the season for the Hawks, setting a new program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• George Mason (30-26) took the lead in the top of the second on the back of three consecutive bunts.

• The Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning.  Richard Beggy led off the frame and was hit by a pitch before Joey Pagano walked.  Jason Janesko sacrificed the runners up a base before Tim Dickinson brought home Beggy to tie the game.

• An RBI single for Luciano Terrilli in the third put the Patriots back on top, 2-1.

• Saint Joseph's (36-19) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Blake Primrose started the inning with a single before Beggy walked and Pagano singled to load the bases.  After a pitching change, Jason Janesko brought in a run on a fielder's choice to tie the game.  Dickinson then drove in Beggy with another RBI groundout before a single by Alex Venezia extended the lead to 4-2.

• The Patriots got one back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Owen Clyne, but the Hawks extended the lead in the bottom of the frame.  Gale and Primrose singled on either side of a walk to Alex Kelsey to once again load the bases with nobody out, precipitating another pitching change.  A Beggy sacrifice fly restored the two-run lead before Pagano walked to reload the bases.  Janesko then hit into another run-scoring fielder's choice to make it a 6-3 game.

• Terrilli hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth for the Patriots, but Saint Joseph's responded again in the bottom of the inning as Gale hit a two-out single before Kelsey sent a rocket over the right field fence to make it 8-4.  Primrose then walked before Beggy launched a no-doubt-about-it shot over the left field wall for a 10-4 lead.

• The Hawks batted around in the bottom of the seventh.  Dickinson started things off with a double before walks to Venezia and Applegate led to a bases-loaded, nobody-out pitching change for the third time in the game.  Joey Gale greeted the new arm with a two-run single for a 12-4 Hawk advantage.

• After a walk to Primrose and another pitching change, Pagano and Janesko drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks to force in a pair of runs and set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Fehrman was outstanding on Friday night, turning in a complete-game effort under difficult conditions when his team needed it most.  He allowed four runs and scattered eight hits while striking out nine in nine innings.

• Aiden Parker took the loss for George Mason, allowing four runs on three hits in three innings.

• Gale went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and two driven in while Kelsey, Primrose, and Venezia had two hits apiece.  Pagano was 1-for-1 with three walks and was hit by a pitch to reach base in all five plate appearances; Primrose drew three walks to reach bases five times as well.

• Beggy added three runs scored and three RBI, while Janesko added three RBI as well.  Kelsey and Primrose each scored twice, and both Kelsey and Dickinson collected two RBI.

• The win gave the Hawks 36 on the season, surpassing the school record of 35 set in 2014.
