PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph's held a lead for nearly 80 minutes, but a late Temple goal in the 87th minute forced the Hawks to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Owls on Friday evening at the Temple Sports Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After inclement weather postponed the match nearly 24 hours, the Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the ninth minute, Mark Mazzoni chased down a ball over the top and deflected the goalkeeper's clearance into his path before finishing into the open net to give Saint Joseph's a 1-0 lead.
- Saint Joseph's held a 7-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, with both goalkeepers making two saves.
- The Hawks created several chances early in the second half, but Sebastian Perez-Gasiba and Mazzoni were each denied by the Temple goalkeeper.
- Alex Smith came up with a vital save in the 73rd minute to preserve the Hawks' lead..
- Jake Ross nearly doubled the advantage with seven minutes remaining, sending a shot just wide of the post.
- Temple capitalized on its final opportunity of the match in the 87th minute, when the Owls headed a ball toward the far post and into the net to equalize and earn a draw on their home field.
