Lee Saverio

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Bringing more than three decades of coaching experience to the Hawk dugout, Lee Saverio joined the Saint Joseph's baseball coaching staff as the Hawks' volunteer assistant coach in the fall of 2021.

It marked a return to Hawk Hill for Saverio, who was on the SJU staff in 2008 and served as interim head coach.

During his first season back on Hawk Hill, Saint Joseph's qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship for the second consecutive season, marking the first back-to-back Atlantic 10 postseason trips in program history.

Saverio returned to Hawk Hill after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Chestnut Hill.  Prior to his stint with the Griffins, Saverio was the hitting coach for Lehigh for three seasons before serving on the coaching staff at Villanova for three more.

He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at La Salle before becoming the head coach of the program from 2003 through 2007; his 2006 Explorers squad won the Liberty Bell Classic and was named the Philadelphia Big Five Baseball Team of the Year while Saverio himself earned Big 5 Coach of the Year honors.  Four of his players would go on to be drafted by Major League clubs.

Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Saverio helmed the Cheltenham High School baseball program from 1987 through 2001.  He has also coached in the Pennsylvania Keystone State Games, the Carpenter Cup, and the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Classic; he also spent two summers with the Quakertown Blazers of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League and previously served as a scout for the New York Mets organization.

"Lee has been around our program for several years, working many of our camps throughout the summer," head coach Fritz Hamburg said.  "He's assumed many roles throughout his coaching career, beginning at the high school level and moving into the collegiate ranks as an assistant, as well as holding the position of head coach at La Salle for several years.  In addition, he's managed in the ACBL with Quakertown and scouted for the Mets for a few years, so he has a lot to offer to our program.  I've known Lee a long time and his ability to teach the game is outstanding.  Not only that, his passion, enthusiasm and work ethic in helping the players' development is really impressive."

A graduate of Bloomsburg University, Saverio will work with the Hawk outfielders, base runners, and hitters.
