Promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for High Performance in the summer of 2022, Rob Smith is in his sixth year as a member of the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Department. In his role, Smith is responsible for managing the Strength and Conditioning Department and integrating it into the High Performance team.
Named Director of Strength and Conditioning in September of 2020, Smith came to Hawk Hill after overseeing health education and behavior change programs around health and wellness at Penn as a health and wellness educator for three years. Prior to joining Penn, Smith served as head strength and conditioning coach at the University of San Francisco where he was responsible for overseeing all performance related activities of the men’s basketball program, as well as the strength and conditioning needs for Volleyball.
Additionally working with the NBA, USDA and All Star Baseball Academy, Smith served as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at UConn from 2010-12 where he assisted in all performance related activities with the football team, along with leading strength and conditioning needs for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, men’s and women’s swimming teams, and the women’s lacrosse team. He joined UConn’s strength and conditioning department as an intern assisting with the football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, crew, and baseball programs.
Graduating from UConn in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a concentration in strength and conditioning, Smith earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from UConn in 2012 and master’s degree in public health from the University of San Francisco in 2017.
Smith is additionally a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), a Certified Sports Performance Coach from United States of America Weightlifting (USAW), and certified by Functional Movement Systems in the Functional Movement Screen (FMS).
