MERION STATION, Pa. – Three Saint Joseph's men's tennis student-athletes reached the semifinals of their respective singles flights on day two of the sixth annual Saint Joseph's Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomore Tristan Boustany defeated Brian Stefanowicz of Lafayette, 6-1, 6-4, before cruising past Drexel's Dan Koehler, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the semifinals of the second singles flight.
Meanwhile, senior Jason Sisti and freshman Peter Dewitt will meet in the third flight semifinals on Sunday morning. Sisti eased past Alex Sweet of Delaware, 6-1, 6-4, before outlasting Drexel's Kashyap Ashok, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 11-9 in the quarterfinals. Dewitt defeated Fairfield's Peter Colliard, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 in the second round before topping Joey Hatala of Army, 6-3, 6-3.
In the first flight, senior Pierre Brondeau, junior Andres Urrea, and sophomore Kyle Chalmers all reached the quarterfinals before bowing out. Brondeau earned a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-8 win over Bucknell's Max Kane before falling to Badr Ouabdelmoumen of Drexel, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-8. Urrea played two long matches, beating Mike Furr of Delaware, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 10-7 and succumbing to Army's Michael Nguyen, 6-1, 1-6, 13-11. Chalmers was a 6-2, 6-4 winner against Loyola's Greg Olesnycky before being stopped by Chris Seitz of Villanova, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Junior Renier Moolman fell to Nick Bybel of Bucknell, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round.
In flight number two, junior Kevin Gates reached the quarterfinals, while senior Mike Fallone bowed out in round two. Gates topped Cam Amyot of Fairfield, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Peter Sienko of Army, 6-3, 6-1. Fallone was topped by Drexel's Alex Fioravante, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Valentijn van Erven won his second round match in flight number, dismissing La Salle's Thomas MacLeod by a 6-1, 6-1 score, before dropping his quarterfinal match to Justin Burrus of Villanova, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (0), 10-6.
Junior Sam Cadwell advanced to the quarterfinals of flight four with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mason Keel of Lafayette before falling to Drexel's Vuk Subotic, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore David Pagliarulo went out in the second round, falling to Delaware's Henry Tell, 6-1, 7-6 (11), while freshman Grant Boyle went down at the hands of Lafayette's Evan Alexander, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
In doubles play, the Hawks advanced two pairings to the quarterfinals in each flight. In flight one, Chalmers and Urrea were 8-4 winners over Delaware's Furr and Tyler Flematti, while Dewitt and Moolman earned an 8-6 win over Bryan Adams and Dan Wright of Bucknell. Brondeau and Fallone were tripped up in their match by Bucknell's Bybel and Kane, 8-5.
In the second flight, Boustany and Gates cruised past Fairfield's Colliard and Kumeil Hosain, 8-2, while Boyle and Nick Ringle defeated Luke Lemieux and Ty Parks, also of Fairfield, by the same score. Cadwell and Sisti fell to Hatala and Greg Shannon of Army, 8-2, in their second round tilt.
Play is set to conclude in all six main draw and consolation flights on Sunday afternoon.
