Field Hockey Tops Lafayette, 2-0

Sept. 22, 2004

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A pair of goals, one in each half, helped to propel the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (4-4) to a 2-0 victory over Lafayette (2-5) on Finnesey Field. Senior Angela Hanna and sophomore Nicole Antonini tallied for the Crimson and Gray.

A fairly evenly played first half, Hanna provided SJU with all of the offense it would need. She converted a stroke with just 5:41 remaining until intermission, after the LC goalkeeper was whistled for handling the ball in the crease.

Antonini added insurance for SJU, scoring 15:07 into the second half. Sophomore Lauren Luft threaded a crossing pass from the right side between two Lafayette defenders. Antonini then simply directed the ball into the open cage.

Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer needed to make just one save to record her second shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Lafayette's Jill Lambert registered eight saves and was helped out by a couple of defensive saves.

SJU outshot the Leopards 20-8, despite LC maintaining a slim 8-7 advantage on penatly corners.

The win snapped a four game losing streak by SJU to the Leopards and was the team's first victory over LC since 1995, the final season of head coach Michelle Finegan's first stint with the program.

SJU returns to the Finnesey Field turf on Tuesday, September 28 against Drexel.
