PHILADELPHIA -
An early Towson goal proved to the difference this evening as the Tigers downed Saint Joseph's women's soccer team 1-0 at Finnesey Field.
The Tigers struck quickly as Jen Van Horn took a pass from teammate Shannon Jackson and blasted it past Hawks' freshman goalkeeper Jen Kuhn (Wernersville, PA/Conrad Weiser) at the 2:41 mark of the opening half.
Despite trailing 1-0, SJU proved to be the aggressor in the first stanza, out shooting Towson 9-4.
In the second half, the Hawks had an opportunity to tie it late as sophomore Megan Schutt (Sudburry, ONT/Lockerby Composite) took a pass from classmate Ali Wean (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) from only eight yards out. Unfortunately for SJU, Schutt's shot sailed high.
For the game, the Hawks out shot the Tigers 16-12 with Schutt leading the way with eight herself.
Van Horn and Jackson led the way for Towson tallying a combined six shots.
Kuhn made three saves in the loss, as the Hawks fall to 1-5-0. Brandi Daniels made four saves at the other end to earn the shutout as Towson improved to 3-3-0.
Saint Joseph's returns to action this Saturday at Drexel. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
