BETHLEHEM, PA -
Lehigh's goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation proved to be the difference as the Mountain Hawks downed Saint Joseph's 2-1 Tuesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Both teams were at a 1-1 deadlock after a first half that featured 14 combined scoring chances.
With just 1:11 remaining on the clock, Lehigh found an opportune moment to strike. The Mountain Hawks' Jen Fetsick found the back of the net slipping the ball past SJU freshman goalkeeper Jen Kuhn as she came out to challenge the shot.
The Hawks failed to get another scoring opportunity.
In the first half, Lehigh opened the scoring just 15 minutes into the first half as Gina Lewandowski's shot from 18 yards out sailed over the head of Kuhn and into the back of the net.
Saint Joseph's rallied to tie the score 10 minutes later as sophomore Kaiti McCaffery scored her second goal in as many games. McCaffery took a pass from junior Alisha Paine and beat Lehigh's goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz to tie the score at one apiece. For the game, Lehigh out shot the Hawks 15-12 and edged SJU in corner kicks, 8-1.
Kuhn was the hard-luck loser, making seven saves on the night, while Iwaskiewicz made five saves in the win.
Senior Marisa Barrier led SJU with five shots and sophomore forward Megan Schutt earned an assist on McCaffery's goal.
Lehigh's Lauren Calabrese and Melissa Montalvo were each credited with an assist.
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-3 on the season, while Lehigh improves to 3-2.
Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday at Loyola (Md.). Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
