Hawks Fall In Season Opener, 1-0

NEWARK, DE - Delaware's Shelby Lawrence's shot from 20 yards out sailed past the outstretched hands of Hawks goalkeeper Jen Kuhn just 31 seconds into the second overtime session as the Blue Hens downed Saint Joseph's 1-0 Friday night at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Delaware controlled the first half, outshooting SJU 7-2. The Hawks fought back with five scoring chances in the second half, but failed to convert.

Saint Joseph's sophomore forward Megan Schutt had an opportunity to win the game for the Hawks in the first overtime session on a brake away, but Delaware's Lindsay Shover to keep the game scoreless.

Schutt led the Hawks with four shots, while Kuhn made two saves.

Shover posted the shutout, making two saves for the Blue Hens, while teammate Shannon Alger was credited the assist on Lawrence's goal.

With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-1 on the season, while Delaware improves to 1-0.

Saint Joseph's returns to action next Friday at Big Five rival Villanova. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
