HAWKS FALL TO PENN, 7-0

PHILADELPHIA, PA (2/16/02) -- The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team was swept by Penn 7-0 during Saturday afternoon's match. With the loss of number one singles player Shawn Farrokh for the past four contests, the Hawks are 2-4 on the season. Farrokh, a sixth-year senior, appealed to the NCAA earlier this year to gain a final semester of collegiate eligibility. After transferring to SJU as a sophomore in 1998 from Limestone college, Farrokh could have faced being ineligible for exhausting all of his time at both schools. Instead, the NCAA has granted Farrokh's request but only after sitting out four matches during the 2002 season. He will return to the number one singles slot this coming weekend when the Hawks face Lehigh and Drexel. In the meantime, freshman Francisco Velazquez has stepped up to the #1 spot, losing his only match of the season to Penn foe 6-3, 6-1. SJU struggled to survive against the Quakers losing all singles and doubles matches during the afternoon competition. The Hawks look to rebound Saturday, February 23 at Lehigh. That match is set for 4:00 pm.
