PITTSBURGH, PA (10/17/03- Damien Pottinger scored four goals and had an assist to lead 22nd-ranked Duquesne to a 5-0 win over Saint Joseph's in men's soccer action. Duquesne improves to 9-1-2 and 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Hawks drop to 6-7 and 3-2 in the league.
Pottinger scored two goals in the first half, the first at 23:06 off assists from Jason Kutney and Dan Hartung. He tallied the next just seconds before halftime, at 44:33 off a pass from Sean Park.
Pottinger and Matt Mehler each had a hand in the next three Duquesne goals. Pottinger scored at 51:06 and then at 59:53, with assists on both goals coming from Mehler. Derek Freund was also credited with an assist on the Dukes' fourth goal. Freund closed out the scoring at 63:24 as Mehler and Pottinger assisted.
Duquesne outshot the Hawks, 21-5, while goalkeeper Zach Varga made two saves. Bret Krotee replaced Varga with 12 minutes to play and did not make a save.
For Saint Joseph's,
Kevin Dougher made five saves in 65 minutes of action. Chris DeStefano made one save in 24 minutes.
The Hawks continue their conference trip with a date at St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
