DALLAS, TX (03/15/03) - Saint Joseph's wrapped up its spring break trip to Texas with a 7-0 thrashing of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday. The match was played at Southern Methodist University.
The Hawks took all six singles matches without dropping a single set. Sophomore Frank Velazquez was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at #1, while freshman Jimmy Holland added a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #2.
Freshman Chris Spencer (6-1, 6-3) and sophomore Van Homer Pangilinan (6-1, 7-5) were winners at #3 and #4, respectively. Rounding out the lineup with wins were freshmen Antonio Aniello (6-1, 6-2 at #5) and A.J. Garabedian (6-1, 6-3 at #6).
With their singles wins, Velazquez and Holland continuing re-writing the Hawk record book. Velazquez is now tied for third in career wins with 35, after competing for just two seasons on Hawk Hill. He is now tied with Pat Mulvaney '02 on the career list and needs three more to tie current assistant coach Leonardo Barbosa '98 for second all-time.
Holland is now tied for second in a season in wins with 16 with all-time Hawk great Frank Barnett '71. Velazquez holds the all-time record with 21 wins, set last season.
Holland and Garabedian teamed up for a 9-8 (5) victory at first doubles while Velazquez and Pangilinan were winners at second doubles.
SJU improves to 5-5 and next hits the court for its home opener on Wednesday against Delaware.
