PHILADELPHIA (10/23/02) - Saint Joseph's University men's basketball coach
Phil Martelli continues his long history of adding walk-on players to his team with the addition of juniors Robert Hartshorn and Brian Jesiolowski to the 2002-03 squad.
Hartshorn, a 6-3, 195-pound guard, played two years of high school basketball at Clearview Regional High in Mullica Hill, NJ. The Sewell, NJ native took the most unusual route to the Hawk basketball team of any of the previous walk-on additions in Martelli's eight-year tenure as the team's head coach. Prior to trying out for the varsity team this season, he was a two-year member of Saint Joseph's nationally-ranked cheerleading squad.
As a high school player, he averaged 15.1 points and 7.2 assists per game as a senior, earning honorable mention all-Group 3 honors by the Courier Post. He also was a standout on the Clearview Regional football team, earning third team all-Group 3 honors as a defensive end and honorable mention as a running back (six TD receptions) as a senior.
Jesiolowski, a 6-7, 195-pound forward, took the more traditional route to making the SJU basketball team. The Lebanon, PA native played two seasons with the SJU junior varsity squad. He becomes the fifth player to make the jump from junior varsity to varsity since the program was reinstated in 1993.
As a senior at Lebanon Catholic, Jesiolowski averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game, helping lead his team to the Class A District III Championship.
Hartshorn and Jesiolowski become the eighth and ninth walk-ons to make the SJU men's basketball team in Martelli's tenure as head coach.
