A Statement From Billy Lange

Six years ago, Saint Joseph's University entrusted me to lead its historic basketball program and provided me with a clear directive: build on the tradition that means so much to so many and create a successful and sustainable model for St. Joe's Basketball.

Immediately upon embarking on this journey, the program was thrust into a period of unrelenting challenges and adversity. Through these fires, God gracefully and mercifully refined me—strengthening the character of my leadership and deepening my dependence on steadfast and immovable faith. I am grateful for it all.

Today, with an abundance of contentment and peace, I leave Saint Joseph's as its Head Men's Basketball Coach to step into an opportunity made possible only through my time stewarding the program we all love. With Steve Donahue moving into the head coach role, I confidently pass along a foundation and a structure that was built brick by brick, without compromise, and occupied by united competitors whose hearts are filled with a bold vision.

It has been a privilege to be a part of our University's Jesuit mission. I am grateful for the friendship, patience and fortitude of Jill Bodensteiner, the belief exuded by Dr. Cheryl McConnell, and the generosity of supportive constituents—especially Mr. Jim Maguire.

The unconditional love of my wife, my sons, my brother and sister-in-law, and my mother and father helped me understand how blessed I am to be a husband, father, brother, and son. You are my heart.

To the men who wore the Crimson and Gray, and to the resilient staff who stood shoulder to shoulder developing mind, body, spirit, and skill: Thank you! Iron sharpened iron. Together you cultivated a culture and competed with a joy and swagger that is recognized and admired by those who know us best. Respecting, Elevating, and Serving you was my honor. Your trust in me was humbling, and I will love you all forever. Because of your endurance, St. Joe's Basketball is thriving.

Saint Joseph's University and Hawk Hill faithful, when we are committed and all in, the spirit of our community is strong—no one can rival the energy, the grit, the authenticity, and the connection. This has always been, still is, and will always be… your program.

The Hawk Will Never Die.
