PHILADELPHIA (3/21/04) -- SJU won four of the six singles matches, which proved to be enough to knock off St. Bonaventure, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Bonnies are the reigning Atlantic 10 Champions and saw that they might have a tough time holding onto the trophy when the A-10 Tournament rolls around in early April.
The Hawks won only the #3 doubles match as sophomores
Chris Spencer and
Antonio Aniello teamed for a 8-3 win. Going into the singles competition, SBU held a 1-0 advantage.
Junior
Francisco Velazquez defeated fellow all-conference performer Mario Arce, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first of four singles matches that went three sets. Sophomore
Jimmy Holland also earned a tough win at #2 singles, winning 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (14-12).
Classmate
A.J. Garabedian was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at #4 and Aniello also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The win improves SJU's record to 6-6 on the season, while the Bonnies drop to 8-8.
